One of the breakout sessions I attended during Quickbooks Connect 2022 talked about getting started with no-code development. I had poked around with no-code tools previously, but this still helped open my eyes to all the possibilities!

What is no-code and why is it important not just for bookkeepers but for any business that wants to operate efficiently?

Did that make sense? For most of us, probably not. I have no idea what it means either, if anything. I asked AI for a piece of code and that’s what I got, but that’s another post for another time…

For us normal people that don’t understand code, there’s hope in no-code!

No-code development is a type of software development that doesn’t require the user to write code (as the name suggests) in order to set up complex workflows. This allows businesses to quickly create automated processes without having to invest in additional resources or expert coding skills. Although it has been around for some time, no-code development has become increasingly popular as it provides valuable solutions for businesses of all sizes when it comes to improving efficiency. It is revolutionizing the way that not only bookkeepers but any business can tackle their daily tasks. With the help of tools like Airtable and Zapier, business owners can now easily create complex workflows without having to write a single line of code. From automated organizing, scheduling, sending invoices and collecting payments, to running background checks and streamlining document management – these automation tools are designed to make the lives of small business owners easier.

Airtable enables users to build powerful databases with an intuitive drag-and-drop setup. It also supports integrations with other platforms such as Zapier and Google Sheets, allowing businesses to sync data across different systems quickly and efficiently. No matter what task you’re trying to accomplish, Airtable can be leveraged to create process flows that save time and money while maintaining accuracy.

Zapier automates manual processes by combining two or more apps together in order to automate routine tasks – like managing customer records or generating reports from multiple sources. With this tool, businesses can streamline their operations by setting up Zapier automations for functions such as sending out invoices at predetermined intervals or automatically archiving documents in a secure folder on Dropbox when certain conditions are triggered.

When it comes to finding the best no-code tools, it’s important to look at all of the available options. It can be difficult to decide on the right solution for your needs and since there are so many choices out there, chances are, multiple solutions have potential. Take the time to research and explore different options, weigh their pros and cons against each other and compare features before making a decision. By taking an analytical approach and exploring multiple no-code tools, you’ll be much more likely to find a tool that works well for you.

But where do I start with automating my workflows?

Use the following steps to identify a workflow to automate and get started on building it out:

  1. Identify a repetitive task – Tasks that are performed exactly the same over and over again are ripe for automation.
  2. Open your mind to new solutions – Just because you’ve been doing something a certain way doesn’t mean it has to continue that way.
  3. Define the outcome – Where do you want to end up and the end of this workflow? Without knowing where you’re going, you’ll never get there.
  4. List the components of the data structure – Write out every part of your workflow and all the pieces of information that impact it. Feel free to doodle, draw pictures, and add lines/arrows if that helps visualize it.
  5. Choose your tools – Once you’ve identified the repetitive task, defined where you want to end up, and have diagramed all the pieces, you can pick the no-code solution best suited for the job.

In summary, no-code development is a powerful tool that can help businesses of all sizes improve their efficiency. With the help of no-code development tools like Airtable and Zapier, business owners can easily create complex workflows without having to write a single line of code.
